dj foundation is a 23 year old resident of mosul, still one of iraq's most troubled cities. from a battered pc he plunders global music and tv, fusing his love of arab pop and western disco with acute news sense and dungeon humour. two years after finding foundation on myspace, metal postcard brings you his debut double vinyl, 'paradise', the first major musical account of the 'war on terror' and the early 21st century.

The album laces addictive dancepop with a huge vocal cast of religious leaders, politicans, pop stars and the public. it's one instane planet under god's groove - from the bullet -stomp of 'all night' to 'alaluyah's religious bedlam, through culture-collisions 'god is dead' and 'ghad', to the final 18 minute 'going out in style'.

I suppose I"ve been a bit busy with other things over the last couple of years and never quite managed to finish these off as an album. Rather than simply let them languish on a hard-drive I thought I might as well put them out in some sense... So here is the entirely free, reasonable high quality MP3 copy of the so called album...

All songs written, recorded, played and all that stuff by Luke Collison. Recorded in various houses in Newtown, Ashfield and Stanmore (Sydney Australia) between 2006 and 2007. or some perhaps even 2005.

He also contributed a storming cut to the Lord Lucan is Still Missing 12" here at 12 Apostles that scored us a top 10 position in the BBC Radio 1 Festive 50.

WOW is:
Matt Cribb Vox / Guitar / Electronics

WOW is the brainchild of Sydney resident Matt Cribb, the collective result of not being able to play any instruments properly and spending too much time locked in the back room of his house, with a strobe light on, messing around with drum machines and cheap keyboards.

Bree Carter rounds off the boy / girl duo, bringing her amazing sixth sense of pop sensibility to the table, and an ability to know what sounds belong in what parts and which songs need what sounds and where to put those sounds and so on and so on.

WOW passed around some home recorded demos in November 2007 which resulted in high rotation on FBi radio in Sydney and several appearances on Triple J’s Unearthed website and television show as a “featured artist”.

WOW then went on to play their first few live sets, supporting groups such as Crystal Castles from Canada, Pets With Pets & The Emergency from Melbourne, and Theatre Of Disco & Cassette Kids from Sydney, and also appearing at Sydney’s Field Day festival at the Domain on New Years Day, alongside Girl Talk, Spank Rock, Uffie, Midnight Juggernauts, Damn Arms & many more.

Those of you who love your electro slightly dipping below the out there regions of left field minimalism may do well to check this out. WOW are Australian boy / girl duo Bree and Matt who it seems have a thing for acutely icy and primal no wave / new wave dialects, their retro recipes disturbingly consumed by edgily paranoiac detached accents and bearing down with a de-sensitised monochromatic knowingness, all at once caustic, acerbic and fractured 'common species' is a futuristic mantra of sorts.

Frankly all considered cool record collections need this.

Horrifically out of tune boy / girl vocals, electronic drums that sound like someone alternatively kicking a cupboard and slapping an aluminium roof with a cricket bat, hollowed out bass guitar, guitars sharp enough to garrotte people with a laser-gun-duet-on-a-vintage-spaceship sounds - yes, WOW is the non-musician's musician / explorer in the garage having the recording party of a lifetime. Pointless trash wearing a try-and-guess-if-we're-being-ironic sneer, this should do fantastically well.

Very tasty dance pop track. It's fun. It moves. It makes you want to move. That's all I need. Thanks WOW.

The end product .. is brilliant: disco-punk, with an element of pop to it... Each song maintains it’s own individuality throughout, a rarity in modern times in which songs just seem to amalgamate into one general ‘sound’. If you were to throw The Lost Valentinos, Crystal Castles and Gang of Four into a blender, you’d end up with a WOW smoothie.

Melbourne’s The Emergency return as a duo with two new disco cuts on New York’s Metal Postcard label. More delicate and spacey than anything on their excellent last album, this 7” finds Milo Kossowski and Morgan McWaters down the bloody vampire vibe in favour of a colder, more pneumatic kind of funk. It’s as fresh and breezy an effort as anything produced by the much hyped Italo-Disco school and, while all the signifiers of that movement are here – synthetic guitar, sequenced bass, arpeggiated synths – The Emergency never sound quotational or calculated like so many new club acts.

A-side ‘Spending Time’ is calypso robotics with handclaps and rubbery bass throbs. Shakers and electronics are distanced by reverb, and probing lyrics loop like a half-remembered thought; ‘Spend some cash / Waste some time / Life is a string of desires’. ‘Switch Me’ on the flip is a replicant love song with laserbeam synths, cowbells, obsession-fuelled vocals and an exploding second half. Packaged in a black and silver sleeve designed by Milo, this single is a classy outing by one our most futuristic sounding groups.

...Melbourne two piece The Emergency have gone halfway around the world and back again to deliver their new single. The band have hooked up with a label based in New York, who are incidentally set to release new stuff from Dsico soon too (remember him?).
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway, their new single is promising, but it's remix is even hotter. Heavy, grinding beats that travel for a good five minutes and keep you moving. And it comes from a fella from Melbourne too, Harris Robotis, proving that local electro is in a very healthy spot of late.

....More uber cool stereo waresfrom the New York based imprint responsible for those rather essential recent releases by Swoop Swoop and Sunny and Shia. Spending time' opens up a superbly crafted set of back to the old school early 80's club groove. An edgy almost monochrome montage of Spartan dub-tronics and detached white funk ... sounds to these ears like an early career Cabaret Voltaire in a head on mindtrip with the Shamen
'Switch me' is more extrovert in texture, minimalist retro groove shot through with an ice coldglacial fashion house cool that sounds like its been refined in late 70's Sheffield and hallmarked via a Manchester scene of the same era - well tasty if you ask me.

Singer Milo has an attractive monotone residing somewhere between Bernard Sumner and a mellow Joe Strummer, which suits the inverted pop-psychology culminating in 'Spending Time's "Life is a string of desires" lyrics, and the self-deprecating/ironic, "Switch me for you/who needs money when you've got looks?." ' ... This certainly has its charms.

Sandwich Club.FM His weightless sound reminded me of fellow well-dwelling contemporaries, Zach Rogue and Damien Jurado. Incorporating a gritty lo-fi 60s sound, his songs would have also slotted in nicely somewhere on The Forest Gump Soundtrack, maybe for that classic shot of Jenny out the bus window...

[AR] Is This Music Magazine If you like the concept of the modern singer-songwriters but are finding them all too clean and polished to be believable, then Streaky Jake may be right up your street. The entire record seems to be covered in a layer of murky grime that slightly mutes and muffles the tracks but doesn't hide the finger-picking styles or the grizzled vocal delivery. ... vocals reminiscent of The Soledad Brothers, whereas other tracks will be lapped up by fans of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy.

Alternative Ulster.com The debut album from Streaky Jake aka Australian singer-songwriter Sean Gorman, is a self-recorded set of ultra-low-fi folk tunes. Loosely based around the journey through a relationship, the record’s basic production lends a gritty charm to the delicate finger-picking, occasional mouth-organ and simplistic percussion, while Gorman’s evocative voice draws humour, insight and pathos in spades from his quiet meditations on love, sin, death and regret. Call it an age thing - perhaps the onset of senility but we swear this or at least a version of it appeared as a limited Xmas treat download under the working title 'I didn't know I loved you until I saw you Iraq and roll' this time last year. Without doubt and passing bad wind in the face of all things PC (PC as in politically correct and not your personal computer like) these days (isn't it just nice to have a record that jabs a fuck you middle finger in the direction of the moral majority) in terms of bad taste this cutie is sure to upset and intrigue in equal measures. The orgasmic 'God is Dead' runs a similar line to South Central's (recent or is it soon to be released floor rumbler via Art Goes Pop) 'Nothing can go wrong' (see Missive 103) in that it fuses together Gary Gli**ers 'Rock 'n' Roll (part 2)' and the Fall's 'Big New Prinz' while simultaneously upping the ante several notches on their rivals by immersing it in a wealth of X Rated samples scored from, one would imagine, scripts from 70's porn movies. The end result a salacious panting dirty beauty that aside being utterly filthy and sexy with it may well require several cold showers not only for you the listener but your hi-fi as it comes to terms with its newly found awoken sexuality. Flip side features Sonny and Cher's crowning glory 'I got you babe' being hilariously pulverised, cut up, mashed up and fed into the centre stage of a raging and violent cross fire conflict. Now finding itself reworked as (yep you guessed it) 'I shot you babe' by Sunni and Shia - it really does make you wonder whether there is any conceivable or contentious subject matter that those Metal Postcard dudes wouldn't consider touching. That said the editing is a little out which adds to its almost amateurish cocking a snoop charm. On the CD version there's an additional hot 'n' horny retread of 'God is Dead' given a sultry Eastern promise refit braided with all manner of military marching shenanigans which all said and done gives it an KLF appeal. Acid Reign has six tracks of bumping electronic funk with the emphasis on the robotic disco that emanated out of Chicago in that halcyon era of early house music. The track Innovaded (From the Drum Machine) is quite rocking and will be making its way into my dj sets quite soon, as will You'll Never Get Out Of This Club Alive. The final track, We Get Open is very acidic, very nasty, pretty damned funky and melodic all at once, and would definitely set some dance floors on fire.

Chang Wording Girl were formed in 2001 when Kim Kyung-Soon, Serendipity Jin-Ho and Mun Yong-Chik met whilst studying in Seoul. All three shared an interest in the ‘chong-um’ scene which was spearheading a re-interpretation of traditional mask dances and CWG soon became the movement’s most sought-after musicians. This success encouraged them to evolve into a fully-functioning band that was able to pursue a wider agenda and start to fuse strands of contemporary electronica and krautrock into the existing sound. The band has established a working method that favours intensive input to realise single ‘projects’ which are refined and honed over a series of months before being toured and recorded.

For the realisation of the Neon Eon project the band have recruited Aki Matsunga from Japan and Janet Chu from Singapore to provide vocals. The expanded band played live extensively in Korea and Japan in 2005 and have attracted widespread praise for their intense performances and complex collaborations with video and lighting artists.

Neon Eon was produced by Akiko Nane, and mixed/mastered by Slim Salt at Bunsen Burner.

NEON Eon presents an uncompromising sound, a single piece of music that shifts restlessly between moods and arrangements ...opting for an episodic series of compressed but intense tableaux
